My Resilience in the Face of a Broken Healthcare System

Navigating the healthcare system over the past year has been incredibly challenging, but it has also taught me about resilience, determination, and the importance of holistic healing. What began as a search for improved mobility with my prosthetic grew into a struggle for my health, my legs, and my dignity. Here’s my story, one that many can relate to when dealing with a flawed system while seeking recovery.

The Struggle Begins (June–October 2023)

Last summer, my prosthetic stopped fitting correctly, leading to excruciating pain. Despite my desperate requests for assistance, my prosthetist refused to help, leaving me reliant on crutches and a walker. By October, he finally acknowledged the possibility of circulation problems and suggested I consult a doctor.

The vascular surgeon I saw had one recommendation: amputate higher. It felt like a punch to the gut. Was this the best solution the system could provide?

A Shocking Discovery (November–December 2023)

Before I could proceed with the amputation, I failed a stress test that uncovered serious heart issues. My cardiologist put me on blood thinners, and a heart catheterization revealed six blocked coronary arteries. The news was devastating, yet it also sparked hope that surgery could potentially save my life.

In January, after weeks of preparation, I underwent bypass surgery. Although it was a tough journey, I came out of it more determined than ever to take control of my health.

A Holistic Shift (January–February 2024)

Recovery was a slow process, and complications like pleurisy didn’t make it any easier. During this challenging time, I made significant changes to my already holistic lifestyle. I revamped my diet, eliminating vegetable oil and processed foods while incorporating heart-healthy and anti-inflammatory options such as okra, citrus, chia, and avocado. I also added supplements like resveratrol, hawthorn, and vitamin K2, and even crafted a heart and circulation tea blend using mulberry leaves and fresh herbs from my garden.

My legs, which were plagued by blockages, required extra care. I began using red light therapy, created a healing salve from cayenne and Japanese knotweed, and focused on increasing my hydration and fiber intake. Although progress was gradual, it was noticeable; pulses returned to areas that had been dormant for years.

Setbacks and Advocacy (March–June 2024)

Despite my dedication, the vascular surgeon insisted on a higher amputation. I sought a second opinion, and the new surgeon, who confirmed the seven blockages I still had, believed they could be treated without immediate amputation. Unfortunately, I lost this new surgeon before treatment could commence, leaving me once again to rely on my determination and holistic methods.

By June, I had made some strides. Only one wound remained, my garden was thriving as part of my therapy, and I found a new prosthetist who provided exceptional service.

Healing Against the Odds (July–October 2024)

My new prosthetic allowed me to return to work more consistently. However, wound care with a doctor linked to the amputation-focused vascular surgeon proved to be detrimental from the outset. Despite the worsening conditions under his care, I continued with my holistic wound treatment, convinced there had to be a better way.

By October, I decided to part ways with my wound care doctor. It became evident to me that his focus was more on pushing me toward amputation rather than facilitating healing.

Victory Through Holistic Healing (November 2024)

In November, my holistic approach started to show actual results. My wound, which had been slow to heal, finally began to improve significantly. I expect my wound to be completely healed by December, proving that determination and alternative methods can work.

What I’ve Learned

This past year has shown me that while the healthcare system is essential, it often doesn’t meet individual needs effectively. Advocacy is vital, and exploring holistic options is important when traditional medicine falls short. I’ve learned to trust my instincts, seek second opinions, and advocate for the care I deserve.

Most importantly, I’ve realized that healing is a journey that requires a mix of conventional medicine, holistic practices, and a firm commitment to self-care.

To anyone on a similar journey, I urge you to persevere. Speak out, explore alternatives, and always believe in your body’s capacity to heal.
